CompTIA Certification: What’s it all about

CompTIA Certification is given by the Computing Technology Industry Association. CompTIA is a non-profit organization whose goal is to further the global interests of IT professionals around the world. Their aim is to improve the employment opportunities and skills validation for IT professionals, as well as improve the quality of IT hires and employees for businesses. CompTIA provides certifications that validate the skills of people in the IT field. To earn a CompTIA certification, a candidate must pass a certification exam or a series of certification exams. Once the candidate has passed the certification exam, the company provides documentation that the person has earned the appropriate CompTIA certification. In addition to certification exams, CompTIA provides information and education for the IT community at large.

Value of CompTIA Certification

CompTIA certification gives the IT professional greater leverage when searching for a job and for keeping employment. By earning a CompTIA certification, you're showing potential employers and other members of the community that you have passed the exams that validate your IT skills. In addition to certifying your IT skills, CompTIA certification shows that you have the "career-consciousness" to be proactive and pursue credentials and certifications that are attractive to potential employers. There are many rewards and incentives for people with CompTIA certifications. Statistics show that IT certifications can lead to salaries 30% greater than salaries for those without IT certification. CompTIA certification is among the most widely accepted and respected IT certifications in the industry. Plus, CompTIA certifications are an important credential in the U.S. Department of Defense's initiative to ensure all personnel who work with DOD technology are properly certified.

Computer Technicians

Computer technicians install, repair, maintain, and analyse many different types of computer equipment, including everything from laptops to systems that monitor changes in the Earth’s atmosphere. The exact duties of someone in this position vary depending on his or her training, experience, and the specific job, and they tend to change and expand as technology evolves. Some people specialize in working on networks or servers, while others work in areas related to forensics and user support, but all generally start out with the same basic education.

Below we outline the different CompTIA Trained Technicians. Keep in mind however that The IT College considers A+ & Network+ to be foundation level training for all our technical courses:

Computer Repair Technician (CompTIA A+)

CompTIA’s A+ certification is meant for entry-level computer technicians. The A+ certification is a vendor-neutral certification that was introduced in 1993 and is now held by over 600,000 people. It has no prerequisites but is widely used as a starting point for various system administration and network administration certifications.

The exams and requirements for A+ certification are revised and updated by CompTIA approximately every three years. When revisions are made, the tests are released with new exam numbers and the old versions of the test are phased out. Generally, there is a short period of time where both the new version and older version are available for test takers. This is done to accommodate people who have been training for the older exam. However, once that grace period is over, the older exam is retired.

Specific Course Information

Current Examination Standard : 801 & 802

Course Duration                       : 12 Months @ 6 hours per week

Network Technician (CompTIA Network+)

Network+ certification, like other CompTIA offerings, is an entry-level and vendor neutral certification. This credential is designed for IT professionals who possess nine months of on-the-job experience in network administration or support. This certification is intended to demonstrate the candidate's knowledge of foundational networking concepts. According to CompTIA, over 150,000 networking professionals have achieved the Network+ certification. Network+ is a natural stepping stone toward more advanced credentials, such as the Microsoft MCSE and EC-Council CEH. There are no formal prerequisites for Network+, however, CompTIA recommends that candidates first achieve the A+ certification.

Network+ is a popular credential for system and network administrators. In order to achieve the certification, candidates must pass one conventional format exam which covers objectives such as: protocols, media and topologies, network implementation and network support. The Network+ Certification exam (N10-003), was originally introduced in 1997. The most recent update to this exam came in 2009. Similar to other CompTIA certifications, once a candidate achieves Network+, he/she is certified for life and the credential does not expire.

Server Technician (CompTIA Server+)

CompTIA’s Server+ certification is meant for mid- to upper-level technicians responsible for server hardware functionality. It is a mid-level, vendor-neutral certification which is a pertinent complement to vendor-specific networking certifications. Although there are no prerequisites for this certification, CompTIA recommends that you possess the A+ and Network+ certifications. This certification is well suited to system administrators. The Server+ designation is achieved by passing one conventional format exam that covers server issues such as installation, configuration, upgrading, maintenance, troubleshooting and disaster recovery. The Server+ certification thus demonstrates the candidate’s foundation-level knowledge of hardware support. Like other CompTIA offerings, once a person achieves the Server+, the certification will not expire.

Security Technician (CompTIA Security+)

CompTIA Security+ certification is an entry level security credential which is designed for IT professionals with two years of networking experience with a focus on security. Like other CompTIA certifications, Security+ is vendor-neutral and is intended to provide a natural step toward more advanced security credentials such as CISSP and GIAC. In addition, Security+ can provide credit toward some Microsoft certification paths.

Security+ is a relevant certification for network and security administrators across the industry. In order to obtain this certification, candidates must pass a single exam that encompasses topics such as infrastructure security, access control, authentication, cryptography and communication security. Security+ allows professionals to demonstrate a focus in information security and the skills needed to thwart malicious attacks and mitigate costs associated with security breaches. Like other CompTIA certifications, Security+ does not expire.

The CompTIA Security+ exam has long stood as the forefront entry-level exam to the field of security. Through its difficulty, complexity of scope and broad spectrum covering numerous aspects of the IT field, it has become one of the most sought after and respected certification offered by CompTIA, so much so that other companies, such as Microsoft, have long since used the CompTIA Security+ as an alternative choice for their elective exams for the MCSE.
